Toby Morris
Executive Director

Toby Morris is a 7th generation resident of the Hawaiian islands. He is a father and University of Hawai‘i alumni born and raised on Oahu. He is a Kailua small business owner, a community advocate for natural resource protection, and the founder of Manu Iwa as well as Save it for the Keiki, a citizen’s group concerned with tourism management. Toby is an avid paddler, surfer, fisher, and waterman.
Derek Esibill

Derek is a father, educator, scientist and community leader with roots in Kailua for over 20 years. Currently he leads a variety of programs at the Pacific American Foundation including: Watershed Investigations, Research, Education, and Design (WIRED) program director, technology coordinator, network administrator, STEM coordinator, and Nature Activities for Learning and Understanding (NALU) studies science and engineering. He is a lecturer at the Windward Community College and an avid sailor and ecosystem service leader.
John Foti

John is a lifelong resident of Kailua and an avid fisherman, canoe racer, and community leader building cultural and community ties as a waterman. He is a leader for the Lanikai Canoe Club and the owner of Kula Corp. As an advocate for environmental sustainability, John is involved in a number of initiatives aimed at protecting and preserving Hawaii’s natural resources for future generations.
Dr. Elizabeth Madin
Board Member at Large
Dr. Elizabeth Madin leads the Madin Lab at the University of Hawaii HIMB. She is a marine ecologist whose works at the interface of science and conservation. She is particularly interested in doing science that informs environmental policy and working towards ‘scaleable’ solutions for environmental challenges facing the ocean at local, regional and global scales. Her research program focuses broadly on how humans impact ocean ecosystems – more specifically – on the intersection of human impacts and animal behaviour and how this interaction can lead to cascading effects through food webs.
Byron Ko‘omealani Amona

With deep Hawaiian roots, Byron’s lifelong pursuit of an ocean enthusiast has resulted in a large network of associates with ties to the ocean. Byron is a bridge builder and his network has been instrumental for Manu ‘Iwa O Ka Malakai to move around barriers. He is a founder of Hui O He‘e Nalu, life long surfer and respected Hawaiian waterman; retired ocean safety officer, lifelong resident of Kailua and an advocate for Hawaiian sovereignty.
